World Thrombosis Day Campaign Welcomes New Global Thrombosis Experts to Scientific Steering Committee

Six New Members Represent Diverse Leadership for Global Awareness Campaign
CHAPEL HILL, NC, USA, January 8, 2020 – The World Thrombosis Day campaign, led by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), today announced the appointment of six new members to its global scientific Steering Committee. Recognized on 13 October, World Thrombosis Day focuses attention on the often overlooked and misunderstood condition of thrombosis with the goal to increase global awareness and ultimately reduce death and disability caused by the condition.
Going into its seventh year, the World Thrombosis Day campaign is guided by a Steering Committee of international medical experts in the fields of hematology, thrombosis and hemostasis, vascular and general internal medicine, and public health under the leadership of Chair Beverley Hunt, OBE, of the United Kingdom.
Following a competitive application and review process, the subsequent six new members begin their term as of January 2020:
- Stefano Barco (Germany)
- Lana Castellucci (Canada)
- Gabriela Cesarman-Maus (Mexico)
- Erich De Paula (Brazil)
- Mert Dumantepe (Turkey)
- Maria Cecilia Guillermo (Uruguay)
“We are proud to welcome such a respected and accomplished group of experts to the World Thrombosis Day Steering Committee,” said Hunt. “As a global awareness campaign, we place a high value on diverse representation across all regions of the world, and this is well-represented in the geographic locations of our new committee members. We look forward to working together to further the campaign’s mission and help save lives.”
The incoming Steering Committee members will serve a two-year term from 2020-2022 with the option for renewal. They are joined by the existing Steering Committee members, comprising of a 14-person total global Steering Committee.
Following the ISTH’s formal committee rotation pattern, the following individuals recently rotated off the World Thrombosis Day Steering Committee after more than five years of service to the campaign: Pantep Angchaisuksiri (Thailand), Alicia Blanco (Argentina), Elaine Hylek (USA), Lord Ajay Kakkar (UK), Jeffrey Weitz (Canada) and Aaron Wendelboe (USA).
