Award-Winning Global Campaign Heightens Efforts this Year to Share Patient and Survivor Stories to Highlight the Prevalence of Blood Clots—the Leading Cause of Preventable Deaths Worldwide CHAPEL HILL, NC, USA, (October 13, 2022) — Today is World Thrombosis Day, a global awareness campaign led by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), recognized annually on October 13 to bring awareness to conditions caused by thrombosis, commonly known as a blood clot(s), that are responsible for one in four deaths worldwide. Ahead of its 10th anniversary in 2023, the World Thrombosis Day campaign, with the tagline “Eyes Open to Thrombosis,” is dedicated to spreading awareness of the signs, symptoms and risk factors of blood clots with the help of more than 3,000 partner organizations who organizing upwards of 10,000 awareness activities worldwide. Blood clots are the underlying cause of heart attacks, ischemic strokes and venous thromboembolism (VTE), the top three cardiovascular killers. Read More

CHAPEL HILL, NC, USA, October 11, 2022 — The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) today announced the recipients of two prestigious global thrombosis advocacy awards for its World Thrombosis Day campaign, now in its ninth year, including the World Thrombosis Day Activity of the Year Award and the Ambassador of the Year Award. For the World Thrombosis Day 2022 Activity of the Year, the campaign recognizes the Mexican Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (Sociedad Mexicana de Trombosis y Hemostasia, SOMETH) for its multifaceted advocacy activities in Mexico. The organization’s array of activities include a drawing contest for children and teens, educational workshops and sessions for healthcare professionals and the general public, building and monument illuminations and press conferences. The World Thrombosis Day (WTD) Scientific Steering Committee has released new important resources on thrombophilia testing and the MTHFR gene polymorphism. MTHFR stands for methylenetrahdrofolate reductase. MTHFR polymorphisms are not an inherited thrombophilia, therefore the WTD Steering Committee recommends that they should not be included as part of a thrombophilia panel. Read More

According to a new article in The Limbic, haematologists in the UK have been told to conserve stocks of alteplase and tenecteplase amid ongoing supply constraints that are expected to last until early next year, as stocks of a key alternative thrombolytic are also running low. According to a national patient safety alert issued by the Department for Health and Social Care and NHS England, restrictions have been put in place for supplies of these medicines until further stock is available. Partners at the University College Hospital Ibadan in Nigeria celebrated WTD 2021 by hosting a healthcare lecture, public awareness activities on the radio, and sharing a patient testimony. The lecture focused on making the hospital a "VTE Safety Zone," and shared presentations on the burden of hospital-associated VTE, a hands-on risk assessment tool to use at the hospital, the role of nurses in VTE care, and thromboprophylaxis practice among physicians. A patient diagnosed with thrombophilia shared her personal journey of thrombosis care. Read More
